Sharks have been cruising the oceans for 400 million years. They are top of their marine food chains and help to regulate the populations of species below them. Threatened with extinction due to illegal poaching, hunting or fishing in certain countries, without sharks the entire marine ecosystem would be thrown out of balance.

A rare encounter with a Bowmouth Guitarfish during a Four Seasons Explorer scuba diving cruise. A solitary species, it uses camouflage when swimming to adapt their colour to the surrounding environment. These animals also present a row of large spines over their eyes, nape and pectoral fins which have a defensive function. Listed as Vulnerable by the IUCN Red List, little is known about the biology and population status of this species. Curious and curiouser? Here's how to encounter the most mysterious marine life in Maldives

Since 1998 Four Seasons has enlisted the help of Marine Savers to help ailing coral reefs and generate new ones. The resulting coral propagation project has grown to become one of the most successful of its kind in the world; having transplanted over 60,000 fragments of coral between 2005 and 2009 alone, it is hoped that the project’s ground-breaking clone selection research will one day lay the foundation for the worldwide use of coral frames to help protect reefs against global warming. All guests - even the little ones! - can participate in the building of coral reefs at our Resorts.
