This is a juvenile of the arrow dartgoby Ptereleotris evides. Adults tend to form pairs but juveniles usually form small aggregations. Contrary to what their common name suggests, these fishes are not in the goby family (Gobiidae). They actually belong to a different family (Microdesmidae). They are generally found hovering 1-2m above the reef, where they feed on zooplankton. 📸:

The island has a fascinating history. The name Lizard Island was given by Captain Cook when he ventured through in 1770. By the 1860s fishermen used the island waters to capture sea cucumber that were sold to Asia. In 1879, Captain Robert Watson who was a sea cucumber fisherman with his wife Mary Watson, two servants and baby, lived on the island. They modified an empty cottage left on the island by the crew of the Julia Percy. The cottage ruins remain today. During our Cooks Look guided tour you will learn further detail about this extraordinary location.
