It was with great pride that we recently assisted in establishing a new population of Seychelles White-eyes on Grande Soeur. North Island itself benefited from endangered species relocation and we are now, in turn, able to perpetuate a virtuous cycle by donating individuals from our healthy White-eye population to other islands in the Seychelles, preventing extinction of this rare endemic bird. The essence of North Island is the eco-sensitive utilisation of a precious natural treasure. From our ‘Noah’s Ark’ rehabilitation programme right through to our food offering, sustainability lies at the very heart of our philosophy and is carefully considered in everything we do. This year’s Earth Day highlights the importance of protecting species. North Island is one of the Green Turtle strongholds in the Inner Islands of the Seychelles, a privilege that requires special measures and daily monitoring. You can encounter this endangered species on a dive or witness it nesting on our protected beaches after dark.
Did you know that the Aldabra Giant Tortoise can live for over a century? In 1997 only a handful of these gentle giants were left on North Island, but now we have a thriving population of approximately 80-100 tortoises, who roam the Island free from harm. Through ongoing work on our Noah’s Ark conservation project, we aim to ensure that our tortoises lead a long and happy life on North Island.
Did you know the Seychelles White-eye was once considered one of the most endangered endemic birds? At the time, a founder population of just 25 birds was reintroduced to North Island in 2007. The Island is now home to between 134 and 152 individuals, a significant proportion of the worldwide population. A responsibility we hold with great pride.
